Famous Logan Countians Exhibit - Pictures on the east wall by the glass exhibit case are of famous people who have lived in Logan County at one time or another, including Blue Jacket, Simon Kenton, Norman Vincent Peale and Kin Hubbard. Information about these famous Logan County sons and daughters can be found in the 3-ring binder on the stand in front of you.

Dr. Henry Knight - Aas a Logan County Resident in the mid to late 19th Century. He was a brilliant man who practiced medicine, law, and served with the government. Dr. Knight was also said to have one of the largest brains ever. His brain weighed 1814 grams, compared to the average human brain that weighs 1350 grams.

 


Japanese Wedding Kimono - Donated by Mrs. Kashiwa Kudo “in appreciation of the hospitality and friendship of the community over the past 6 1/2 years.” (11-27-91) The display case was donated by the International Friendship Center in memory of the Kawaguchi family (6-12-94.)

Women's Hats and Accessories - The display case next to the Donna Spencer Photo Archives shows women’s hats and accessories from the 1830s through the 1890s.

Prominent Logan Countians - On the west wall are sets of pictures of prominent Logan Countians. They are pairs of pictures, first during the Civil War era then later in the 1880s and 1890s.

Butter Pat Plate Collection - In the west display case is the butter pat plate collection of Dorothy Shoots from Zanesfield.

The Schell/Laughlin Murder Case - was one of the most infamous and controversial cases in Logan County’s history. James Schell was accused of murdering Allie Laughlin at the Lewistown Reservoir. He was arrested and later lynched on the lawn of the Court House. However, evidence later pointed to Mr. Schell’s wife as the murderer.

GAR Veterans “throne” from Memorial Hall - These veterans of the Grand Army of the Republic organization held their meetings in this old building starting in 1866 after the Civil War.

First Organ - What is believed to be the first organ in Logan County is on display along the east wall.




The Mills Brothers -
The Mills Brothers are perhaps the most famous sons of Logan County. The Mills family moved to Bellefontaine in the mid to late 1920s from Piqua, Ohio. The brothers signed a radio contract in New York soon after moving here. Consequently, they spent much of their time in New York, but the family home remained in Bellefontaine.
